Hamburg's water wonder: voyage of discovery around Michel on November 9th!

Hamburg, the city on the water, is known for its many facets and impressive sights. On November 9, 2025, the people of Hamburg can once again look forward to the exciting event “Around the Michel” on NDR television. From 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., as well as in the repeat the following day at 1:00 a.m., viewers will be taken into the maritime world of the Hanseatic city. NDR reports that the city not only has more than 2,500 bridges - more than any other city in the world - but is also home to Germany's largest port, which is considered the second largest in Europe.

A highlight of the port culture is the historical fishing. The fish trade plays an important role here, especially in the port. The traditional fish market, which takes place every year at night, is not just an experience for locals. From the fish trade perspective, Werner Lauenroth's business, which has been offering delicious fish delicacies since 1968, deserves special mention. When you talk about fish in Hamburg, you can't ignore Jan Floto, a fish worker from Sasel who specializes in hand-pickled salmon fillets.

Discover water art

Did you know that 100% of drinking water in Hamburg comes from groundwater? With over 450 wells, the city ensures that citizens are always supplied with fresh water. TheWater art on the Elbe island of Kaltehofehas been showing how this drinking water supply works since 1893 and also offers a local recreation area with a park and nature trail. Access is even free!

In this context, Hamburg also promotes maritime culture. In theInternational Maritime Museum HamburgVisitors can admire the largest private maritime collection in the world with over 100,000 exhibits and immerse themselves in the exciting history of seafaring. Not far away, you can enjoy culinary readings on the steamship Schaarhörn, which was built in 1908, while poems by Ringelnatz are recited.

Official matters made easy

But it's not just maritime life that has its place in Hamburg. The administrations have also modernized. The locations for residents' affairs, formerly known as residents' registration offices, offer various services. This includes applying for, extending and issuing passports and identity cards. Online re-registration for single households is also possible, and the offer even includes registering dogs and issuing fishing licenses. An appointment is required in order to make optimal use of the service, and booking by telephone via the authorities' number 115 also works smoothly.

Location opening hours are Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at specific locations such as the City. Hamburg.de further explains that new appointment slots will be activated daily at 7 and 10 a.m., but you should be quick as around 10% of booked appointments are not kept.

Whether maritime tradition or official errands – Hamburg has something to offer for everyone. Stop by, grab a portion of freshly fried fish and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of the city by the water!
