Attempted murder in Duisburg: man seriously injured – arrested!

A dramatic incident occurs in Duisburg, which was initially viewed as a simple accident, but is now attracting the attention of the investigating authorities. On February 17, 2025, a 39-year-old man fell into the stairwell of the subway station at Harry-Epstein-Platz and suffered life-threatening injuries. The injured man underwent emergency surgery and his life was in acute danger. It was only his awakening from the coma and the subsequent statement that led the police in Duisburg to focus on a completely different picture of what happened.
It became known that the 39-year-old was apparently pushed down the stairs by a 25-year-old man who has since been arrested. This suspicion was supported not only by the victim's statements, but also by extensive video materials that were secured at the crime scene.

The alleged perpetrator was arrested on June 12, 2025 after an arrest warrant for attempted murder was issued at the request of the Duisburg public prosecutor's office. During a search of the accused's apartment, valuable evidence was recovered, which will now advance the investigation. “The background to the crime continues to be the subject of intensive investigations,” explains a spokesman for the Duisburg police.

The situation in Germany

But what does this incident tell us about the general situation in Germany? Violent crimes account for less than 4% of all crimes recorded by the police, according to reporting by Statista. Nevertheless, they significantly affect the population's sense of security. About 217,000 violent crimes were recorded in 2024, the highest number since 2007. There has been an increase in violent acts in recent years, which may be exacerbated by economic uncertainty and social pressures.

Surprisingly, around a third of the suspects are under 21 years old, which raises questions about the reasons and influence of social factors. “The increasing number of young violent criminals is alarming,” notes a police spokesman. Nationwide, acts of violence against rescue workers are also at an all-time high. In 2023 alone, over 2,740 such incidents were registered, further driving the worrying trend and arousing public interest.

A worrying trend

The incidents in Duisburg are not an isolated case. Citizens are concerned about the increase in violence and aggression. A May 2024 survey found that 94% of Germans see these issues as a serious concern. The increasing numbers of violent crimes and the people involved shed light on deeper social problems and questions about how to prevent future crimes.

The investigation into the alleged attempted murder in Duisburg is still in full swing and the public remains curious about further developments. The police have already signaled that they are doing everything they can to shed light on this shocking incident.
