Tar alarm in the Weser: Driver lets fluid leak into Motzen!

In an unusual incident, a farm team lost a tar-like liquid at the Motzen ferry dock on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. The team, consisting of a Fendt tractor and a dump truck, had just been transferred from the Blumenthal ferry to Motzen. When leaving the ramp, the liquid escaped from a tank on the dump truck and partially reached the Weser. The driver probably did not notice the incident and continued driving while the liquid spread on the access ramp, reports Tixio.

The Berne volunteer fire department, the lower water authority as well as police and water protection officers were immediately alerted. They closed the affected area and used oil barriers to prevent the liquid from spreading into the Weser. The emergency services took water samples and cleaned the ramp so that the temporarily suspended ferry service could soon be resumed. Other shipping traffic was not affected by the incident. The police are now looking for the perpetrator and are asking for information on 04401/9350, as can be found on presseportal.de.

Agriculture and water protection in discussion

What is happening on the Weser also raises larger questions about the role of agriculture in terms of water protection. Agriculture is the largest water consumer in Europe and climate change will further increase the need for irrigation. According to experts, it is therefore essential that sustainable agricultural systems integrate central environmental and water protection measures.

The EU omnibus package, which is currently being discussed, must not call into question the principles of water protection. Rather, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) should promote best practice solutions to reduce the discharge of pesticides and nitrates into water. It is recommended to make greater use of crops with lower water requirements to minimize environmental impact, as highlighted on wassermeister.net.

This incident on the Weser is an impressive example of how environmental protection and agricultural practices are closely related. The authorities and the EU are called upon to prioritize sustainable use of water and to address climate challenges holistically.

While the police continue to try to identify the driver of the vehicle, the discussion about protecting our waters continues urgently. What happened made it clear: There is something going on and we should all have a good hand when it comes to the environment.
