15,000 euros for the fountain of the Heilandskirche in Hamburg-Uhlenhorst!
There is good news for all fans of historical architecture in Hamburg-Uhlenhorst: The German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD) is providing 15,000 euros for the restoration of the fountain in the courtyard of the Heilandskirche. This valuable support will be ceremoniously handed over on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 3 p.m. Robert Eberhardt, the DSD's local curator in Hamburg, will be present, as will Madeleine Göhring from Lotto Hamburg and Pastor Alexander Bieniasz.
The Heilandskirche, which was built between 1926 and 1928 according to plans by the architect Emil Heynen, has been one of over 60 monuments supported by the DSD in Hamburg since 2010. The brick building with a hipped roof and central, octagonal clock tower is an impressive and historically valuable building. The pointed arched arcades on the ground floor, which are decorated with expressionist elements, are also impressive.
The fountain in the courtyard
But the real eye-catcher in the main courtyard is the fountain, which was designed by Richard Kuöhl, a student of the renowned architect Fritz Schumacher. The fountain consists of three brick blocks, with the middle one showing two ceramic reliefs: the Good Samaritan and Jesus with the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well. In addition, an inscription adorns the pillar: “Whoever believes in me, streams of living water will flow from his body.” The column is also crowned by a cross that rests on a ball.
What is little known is that the left side of the fountain can also be used as a bench, which further underlines the functionality of the courtyard. Thanks to the glazed ceramic plates, the reliefs are not only a visual highlight, but also very easy to care for. The fountain is therefore not only a religious but also a social symbol within the community.
Monument preservation in Hamburg
The restoration of the fountain is a prime example of historic preservation, which is dedicated to the preservation and care of historic buildings, monuments and sites. This important work not only preserves cultural heritage, but also promotes understanding of our history and cultural development. Historical sites also play a major role in tourism and the economic development of a region, as can also be seen in Hamburg.
But monument preservation faces challenges due to decay, environmental influences and modernization. Therefore, qualified professionals, careful documentation and sustainable principles are crucial to the success of these conservation measures. Supporting the DSD is therefore an important step in the right direction to preserve the cultural heritage of the Heilandskirche and its courtyard for future generations.
For those responsible locally and the community, this is a happy occasion that shows that monument preservation is not only a necessity, but also an opportunity to work together to preserve history.
