Eppendorf school wins the E-Waste Race: over 1000 parts collected!

It was the big day for the students in class 7e at the Eppendorf elementary and district school! They are ahead at the E-Waste Race in Hamburg, an environmental initiative that aims to collect and recycle electronic waste. After four weeks of intensive collecting work by friends, families and neighbors, this dedicated group prevailed and secured first place with an incredible 1,741 points. This event not only created a lot of e-waste, but also fostered a strong sense of community.

The award ceremony took place under the watchful eye of St. Pauli President Oke Göttlich, who celebrated the class as winners. The campaign was supported by the initiative“That sets a precedent”, which enabled Hamburg residents to easily report their old electronic waste. During the collection, the students collected over 1,192 items in their free time, including 798 cables, 40 monitors and 16 telephones. Impressive, right?

The entire action in detail

The collected devices were taken to Hamburg Waste Disposal (HME), which takes care of the proper disposal and recovers valuable raw materials such as copper, gold and silver. Class teacher Flemming Gardemeier is enthusiastic about his students’ commitment: “Initially there was skepticism, which quickly turns into enthusiasm.” Parents and neighbors provided strong support and the community spirit was enormous. In additional lessons, the students not only learned about raw materials in electrical devices, but also about their recycling, which raises awareness of sustainability.

But that's not all! Class 7e is already planning new activities, including a “Bring your e-waste day” and a visit to the waste disposal company. This enthusiasm for football is not only reflected in the collection, but also in the teamwork, which Gardemeier praises. “The class showed really good skills,” he says.

The competition never sleeps

The other schools also had great success. The Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium in Wilstorf secured second place with 1,254 points, closely followed by the Campus Kieler Straße district school in Altona, which scored 1,147 points. Each entered part earned one point, but you could also score points through creative actions - a kind of competitive pressure that benefited everyone involved.

The highlight of the event not only affects schools, but also sheds light on the important topic of electronic waste disposal and recycling in Hamburg. To mark this occasion, the city plans to organize more e-waste races in the future. This gives every school class the chance to actively participate in this important initiative and work to protect our environment.

A truly inspiring event! The climate goals can only be achieved with the commitment of the younger generation, and class 7e has sent a strong signal here. As you can see, teamwork can pay off – not just for the students, but for society as a whole!
