Rahlstedt: Hamburg district is growing rapidly - what's behind it?

Hamburg's district landscape is more colorful than ever, and one district in particular catches the eye: Rahlstedt. With an impressive 95,836 inhabitants, Rahlstedt not only has the highest population in the Hanseatic city, but also exceeds Sülldorf ten times and has almost 200 times more inhabitants than Reitbrook, the smallest district of Hamburg. This insightful data comes from the State Statistical Office's latest district profile report, published on November 25, 2025, and sheds light on the growth of Hamburg districts in the coming years. NDR reports on this remarkable growth.

The forecasts are optimistic: Rahlstedt is expected to gain another 6,000 residents by 2040. In 2022 alone, the population in statistical area 74012 increased by 3,043 people, recording a huge increase. This is due to brisk construction activity, particularly on former Bundeswehr land, as well as to the creation of living space. The combination of a location close to nature, good infrastructure and moderate rents makes Rahlstedt a sought-after place to live, so that many temporary residents, including numerous refugees, also find refuge here. Demographic developments

While Rahlstedt is flourishing, other districts in the Wandsbek district are facing challenges. Areas such as Duvenstedt, Wohldorf-Ohlstedt and Bergstedt are seeing a decline in population. This causes uneven growth within the districts and has prompted the district office to initiate measures to stabilize these districts.

The situation in the city is less encouraging: over 15 districts do not have a dental practice, and one in five districts struggles with inadequate pharmacy supplies. Such deficiencies contribute to the fact that not every district is equally attractive for residents. For example, there are many children and young people living in Billstedt, while in Dulsberg, St. Georg and Steinwerder the population of young people is rather low.

Transport connections and infrastructure

The transport connections are another plus point for Rahlstedt. The new S4 line will soon better connect the district to the city center, which has additional potential to increase its attractiveness. This could not only improve the quality of life, but also encourage the influx of new residents.

In contrast, electric cars are rare in the more rural Cranz. Only four private electric vehicles are registered there, while in Othmarschen the number is around 1,400. Such differences make it clear how different the living conditions and opportunities are in the different parts of Hamburg.

Current developments and forecasts clearly show that Rahlstedt is in the fast lane and is likely to become even more important in the coming years. With increasing growth and continued investment in infrastructure, it is to be hoped that this district of Hamburg will become a showcase for urban living. The persistence of the planners and the attractiveness of the district are the key to positive urban development in the Hanseatic city.
