Art in the city park: A heavenly amphitheater conquers Hamburg!
Rotherbaum, Deutschland - On June 23, 2025, the city park in Hamburg shines in new splendor. The focus is on a charming, subtle amphitheater that is enclosed by a hedge. Here the Belgian artist Heidi Voet has created a fascinating installation that reflects the constellation of the Hydra. The colorful balls that are distributed in the amphitheater turned out to be true eye -catchers - they are cast out of concrete, firmly anchored in the ground and form casts of used footballs, golf balls and massage balls. Each piece not only symbolizes the social bonds that arise when playing, but also reflects the vastness of our galaxy.
Why did Voet choose the Hydra? The longest and largest of the 88 constellations visible via Hamburg's night sky has a rich mythology. In old stories, Hydra is an invincible monster that becomes even stronger with every separated head. This metaphor for resilience and fighting spirit runs through the installation and invites visitors to think about personal and social challenges. Voet also addresses a piece of history: in 1735 the mayor of Hamburg is said to have auctioned the remains of a Hydra - a fake specimen, as the scientist Carl Linnaeus later exposed. This creates a connection between mythological stories and reality.
art in public space
The exhibition "From the Cosmos to the Commons", curated by Joanna Warsza, can be seen in the city park until the end of August and includes about a dozen works, all of which have a connection to the starry sky. These works of art are accessible to everyone and enter into a dialogue with the audience - an important aspect that makes art so special in public spaces. According to the article on the Schader Foundation side, art is not only visible outside, but also stimulates people who may not be able to do little to interact and think about it with visual art.
As part of the summer program, works by art historians ABY Warburg can also be seen in the planetarium, which deals with "Serons and Sternlaube". Another highlight in the Kunsthaus is entitled "Between Stars and Signals" and examines the topic of navigation. Visitors are invited to bring their own telescopes to explore the night sky and the stars to which voes stimulates installation to compare in real life. So the night in the city park becomes an experience.
