Big festival on the Rathausmarkt: Hamburgers celebrate democracy and diversity!

The 10th Hamburg Foundation Days began on June 21, 2025 with a colorful kick-off event on the Rathausmarkt. Under the motto“Good days for good deeds”Numerous visitors flocked to a 300 meter long table where around 140 organizations were present. This reports NDR. The event runs until June 29th and is a real highlight for the city as it celebrates the diversity and cohesion in Hamburg.

The Hamburg Foundation Days are not just a series of events, they also offer a deep insight into the work and projects of the city's numerous foundations. Over 1,500 of these foundations make Hamburg the “foundation stronghold” in Germany. In fact, the city has the highest density of foundations per 100,000 inhabitants in all of Germany, which underlines the importance of these institutions hamburg.de highlights.

A Germany-wide call for volunteerism

The Foundation Days initiative is not just about conviviality, but also about commitment. Many of the organizations presented at the table, including Hamburger Tafel and Hanseatic Help, are calling for donations in kind and are also looking for volunteers. Organizer Morten Jendryschik emphasizes the great solidarity in Hamburg, where around 750,000 residents volunteer every week.

The program is accompanied by a colorful mix of events. More than 250 actions were planned until June 29; including workshops, readings, exhibitions and concerts throughout Hamburg. Another special feature is that many events are free, while some require prior registration.

A celebration of nature and culture

This year, the foundation days coincide with the Long Day of City Nature, an initiative of the Loki Schmidt Foundation, which will also be celebrated on June 21st and 22nd. This combination offers Hamburg residents the opportunity to experience nature and culture within the city and become active.

The patronage of the Foundation Days is in the hands of Hamburg's Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD), who underlines the importance of this event for the city and its community. It looks like Hamburg has a good knack for social responsibility and commitment - and the Foundation Days are the best proof that something is going on here. From a singalong with choirs to adventure walks, there is something for every taste, and it's all under the sign of solidarity and cohesion.

The Hamburg Foundation Days not only offer a look at the commitment of local foundations, but also an opportunity to actively participate in a lively and compassionate community. For more information, see hamburger-stiftungen.de.
